Actually, They Mostly Fly

I have written in glowing terms in the past about Sherwood Forest Faire, and I’m still a big fan now, twelve(!) years from my first visit. But I’d like to tell you about (and show you) a specific event within Sherwood that merits more attention: the Hawk Walk.

The linked page has details (and ticketing information — a separate extra-cost ticket is required in addition to fair admission). But, in brief: The Hawk Walk is an interactive falconry demonstration where, as part of a small group, you’ll get to have a hawk fly to and from your hand a few times. You’ll also get to handle a variety of other birds (specifics vary by day). If you love birds of prey, or if you want to dip your toes into waters of falconry without making a huge commitment, this is an experience that is worth the price of admission many times over. I don’t know of any similar programs being offered elsewhere. (If you do, please let me know in the comments.)

The program is presented by Sir Robert Cheseman (Kevin Gaines) of Sky Kings Falconry. Proceeds benefit their 501(c)(3) charity, Wildlife Revealed, which works for education, conservation and rehabilitation of injured birds of prey.

Below are some pictures from my visit to the 10AM Hawk Walk on Sunday, March 05, 2023. (Click the image thumbnail to see a full-size version.)
